Sauternes appellation is located on left bank of the Garonne, in the South-East of Bordeaux.
The appellation covers 1 800 hectares of vineyard producing around 35 000 hl of sweet white wines, blend of Semillon, Sauvignon blanc, and Muscadelle.
The wine produced in Sauternes can reach an unsurpassable class, due to three decisive factors:
_ A great terroir made of a clay-limestone subsoils with layers of gravel deposited,
_ The microclimate very specific,
_ The noble rot of the grapes, due to a high natural moisture content, allowing during vinification to keep a residual sugar that makes all the flavor of this great wine.
Note: The appellation has many Grands Crus Classés and especially one of the most prestigious: Château d'Yquem.
